When too much magnesium or calcium is dissolved in water, we call that water "hard" and usually take steps to mitigate the situation. As hard water can lead to scale build-up in pipes, decreased effectiveness of cleaning agents and reduced lather in soaps and shampoos, a water softener is a cost-effective solution for the typical home or business. 

In a water softener, water flows across a layer of small plastic beads or zeolite (a chemical matrix), both of which are covered with sodium ions. As the water passes over them, the sodium ions simply swap places with the magnesium and calcium ions. When the beads or matrix sodium ions are depleted, they must be regenerated by the addition of salt for the equipment to continue working properly.

As seawater and natural brine in lakes is buffeted by the wind and baked by the sun, water evaporates, leaving behind large crystals of very pure salt known as "Solar Salt."
